History

Founded in 1953, its origin dates back to the Marian congregation of San Luis Gonzaga of the church of San Agustín, led by Father Villamil, an association that brought together young university students of that time.

Its first president was José Besada Varela, who gathered around him 26 founding members of the brotherhood to go out in procession in 1953.

From 1978 to 2014, its president was Manuel Besada Varela and, during those years, the brotherhood helped the resurgence of various brotherhoods and processions. In fact, this brotherhood was responsible for carrying out the first Holy Week Stations of the Cross through the streets of the city, which was later passed into the hands of the Coordinator of Secular Religious Associations. Later, between 2014 and 2018, Antonio Llovo Guillán assumed the presidency; between 2018 and 2022, Juan García Lavandeira, and currently, the president of the brotherhood is Francisco Javier Santos Martínez.

The brotherhood sets out on the night of Holy Thursday. It brings together more than 350 members and its procession is especially important in the city due to its penitential nature. In total silence, which is only interrupted by the bugles and drums of its own band, it has numerous crosses and chains that, in an act of penitence, some of the members carry with them. At the same time, it should be noted that the majority of the members, who wear a habit and hood, cuffs and a blue girdle, mostly process barefoot.

Image

The image of Our Father Jesus Flagellated was carved by Diego de Sande in the first third of the 18th century. Property of the Jesuits, it has an altar and is displayed throughout the year at the headquarters of the brotherhood, the church of San Agustín.

Its float, adorned with red carnations, is characteristic for being carried on shoulders and for the noise made by the forks that the bearers use as support when they beat against the stones of the historic centre of the city.
